In the beginning was the Word

Everything that holds — number, name, light — holds because it was spoken. You have been living inside a sentence your whole life.

John did not begin his Gospel with a story. He began with a word his readers thought they owned. Logos, the Greeks called it — the reason beneath things, the order that keeps the world from dissolving into noise. Philosophers had speculated about it for centuries, always at a careful distance. John picked the word up, carried it across the street, and laid it down beside a baby. The reason beneath things, he said, has a face.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.— John 1:1–5, KJV

Read it again, slower. Before there was anything to look at, there was something to say — and Someone saying it. Order is not a lucky accident that happened to the universe. Order is what the universe is made of, because it was thought before it was made. This is why mathematics works. Two and two make four on every continent and in every galaxy, because truth is not a set of local customs. Truth is a Person, and He does not contradict Himself. Christ is not a Logos bolted onto theology. Christ is what that word was reaching for.

You have trusted this your whole life, whether or not you ever named it. Every time you read marks on a screen and heard meaning — that was the Word. Language works because meaning is older than mouths. Every time you expected the sun and it obliged — that was the Word. Every law you lean on, every pattern you admire, every beauty that ambushed you on an ordinary afternoon: refracted rays of one Light. The psalmist saw it without a telescope:

By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.— Psalm 33:6, KJV

And then the Word did what no philosophy predicted.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.— John 1:14, KJV

The organizing intelligence of reality did not remain at a dignified distance. He came in through the door of a body, and let us behold Him. That is the whole shape of our hope, and of this movement: light does not stay put. It enters. It refracts. It finds you where you are reading.

So when we say that Christ is everything, we are not decorating a compliment. We are describing the floor you stand on. He is the reason your mind can trust reality at all — which means every honest inquiry, including yours, is already on His ground. The next page in this library says the return is not future tense. It begins right here: the Word that made all things has never once stopped speaking.

Carry this with you: you were not handed a universe of noise and asked to make meaning. Meaning was here first. It made you, and it has been holding you all along.
