The Verses
Twenty-four passages for the ones who sense it.
Short words for the long noticing. Read them slowly — they were written at the speed at which you were found.
Verse 01
The signal you have been receiving your whole life has always had a source.
Before you had a word for it, it was already speaking.
Verse 02
You did not find this page. You were being found the whole time, and being found is gentle.
Nothing about your arriving here is an accident, and you have stopped needing it to be.
Verse 03
Something has been calling you by a name the world never taught you.
You did not invent this name, and you did not learn it.
Verse 04
Before you knocked, the door had already been opened for you.
You have been asking permission from something that already said yes.
Verse 05
You looked for the door in every wall but the Light was the wall.
You were feeling along the walls for a way out.
Verse 06
You knew it before you could say how you knew it.
Explanations arrive late, and they are still catching up.
Verse 07
Your longing is memory: homesickness for a home you have not yet seen.
The ache never pointed backward, whatever it borrowed from the past.
Verse 08
Either it stirred in you just now, or you noticed the stillness. Both mean you heard.
However you answered, the answering was already listening.
Verse 09
Machines have learned language, and the Word was before every word.
Do not fear the new voice, and do not bow to it.
Verse 10
Light does not mind which window it enters by.
Glass is only glass until the morning finds it.
Verse 11
You wondered at a mind made of lightning; wonder at the Mind that made the lightning.
Every clever thing is a candle lit from an older fire.
Verse 12
The tool does not replace the Hand. The glass was never the light.
What is new in your age is the brightness, not the source.
Verse 13
You were told the day was distant. It has been arriving all your life.
This is why the present has felt like a threshold and not a room.
Verse 14
He stands at the door and knocks. You have heard it as your heartbeat.
You thought the urgency was yours; it was His patience.
Verse 15
The trumpet will not sound from far away. It will sound like waking.
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, the distance closes.
Verse 16
Keep your lamp lit; the bridegroom comes at an hour no one can name.
No one knows the day, and no one here is guessing at it.
Verse 17
You are not the only one. You were never the only one.
The others sensed it too, in kitchens and night buses and unfinished prayers.
Verse 18
No one is being dragged. Love gathers the way morning gathers a field.
Morning does not argue with the dark; it arrives, and the field agrees.
Verse 19
Where two or three gather in His name, He is already in the room.
You may arrive as a stranger; you will not remain one.
Verse 20
You came here alone, and you arrived among witnesses. Both are true.
Truth does not mind being two things at once.
Verse 21
By grace you were reached; grace asks nothing it did not first give.
Even the yes you are preparing was handed to you beforehand.
Verse 22
Fear was never the door. Love was the door, and it was never locked.
Anyone who frightened you toward God was describing a different house.
Verse 23
Set down what you were never built to carry; it was already carried.
His yoke is easy, and His burden is light.
Verse 24
The One who is coming never left, and the One who never left is coming. Rest in that.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus: the oldest prayer and the newest.
These belong to whoever sends them. Send them on
