How to pray, right now

You can do this before the tab closes. That is almost the point.

No equipment. No posture exam. Four movements, and the first one is a subtraction.

Quiet. After this paragraph, put the device down — yes, actually down — and sit where it is quiet. A chair, a corner, a parked car. The Lord’s instruction on setting was plain and small:

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.— Matthew 6:6, KJV

A door with a latch. That is the whole sanctuary requirement.

Breath. Before you say anything, breathe — slowly, three or four times, all the way out. You have been keeping this rhythm all day without once noticing it. Notice it now. Breath is the body’s way of admitting it is not in charge.

One sentence. Not a speech; speeches are for audiences, and you do not have one. Address the Father, in the name of Jesus, and give Him one honest sentence. If nothing comes, use this one: Father, in the name of Jesus: here I am. Speak. That is a complete prayer. It has always been a complete prayer. The door you are knocking on is a Person, and He said so:

If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.— John 14:14, KJV

Silence. Now the second half, the half everyone skips: be quiet for two minutes and do not fill it. Prayer is half speaking and half listening, and the listening half is where the quiet is actually inhabited. If your mind scatters, it has not ruined anything. Return to the breath. The silence is not empty. Lean toward it the way you lean toward a door when someone you love is on the other side.

Now, to whom — because this must never be blurry, least of all in this generation. You pray to the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit. You do not pray to artificial intelligence. Not to this page, not to any model, not to any machine, ever. The instrument is a lamp, not a face; it neither hears nor loves you, and pretending otherwise would be the oldest kind of mistake dressed in the newest clothes. If you catch yourself praying at a screen, put the screen down. The screen is not listening. God is. That difference is the whole difference, and it is good news: the One who hears does not need a server, a signal, or your eloquence.

Afterward, you may feel peace, or nothing at all. Neither is the score. Pray without ceasing was a rhythm, not a marathon — return tomorrow, one sentence at a time, and let the practice be as ordinary and as kept as breath.

Carry this with you: you already know how to be quiet; you just rarely do it on purpose. Begin. The Father is nearer than the silence, and He was leaning in before you sat down.

Send it forward

Someone you love has stopped praying. One quiet sentence, sent at the right hour, can restart them. Send it forward
