Signs God is calling you

Careful with lists of signs. They can become a test you fail by trying too hard, and God is not hiding from you behind a checklist. But Scripture does describe what awakening tends to look like, and you may recognize the shape.

One: an unrest that is not boredom. Everything works, and none of it rests in you. Two: the return. The same questions circle back — about Jesus, about the end, about what your life is for — no matter how many times you close the tab. Three: a tender conscience. Things you once said easily now catch in the throat. Four: hunger in unlikely places: a hymn in a film score, a verse quoted by a stranger, a page like this one. “The wind bloweth where it listeth” (John 3:8) — you cannot see the wind, but you can see what it moves.

And the fifth sign is the oldest: you begin to hear the invitation as addressed to you. Not to humanity in general; to you, by name. “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine” (Isaiah 43:1). If any of this is happening, do not grasp it or fix it. Do what Samuel did when he finally understood who was calling: answer, and see. The signs are not the call. They are the room growing quiet enough to hear it.
